In Memory Of Art Sevem
Just under 3 years ago, I had to choose my classes for college. Blessed as I am, this is how I came to know Dr. Sevem. As fate would have it, he ended up being my Chemistry professor.
I had Chemistry in high school, but the experience left me with a bitter outlook for the next two semesters. After a couple of days, the light had shined and their was promise for the future. I had gotten an A+ on the first test. Actually, it was so easy that I thought it was a joke! Then, I heard Art say those magic words that I hate to hear; "You're going to get another, right!" From that point on, it was clear sailing. Inspired by his mastery of Chemistry and an occasional prodding, I proceeded to master Chemistry, one A+ at a time. I learned so much that he asked me to tutor the class, not just a student, but the whole class. He had feared that he may have forgotten something. I made sure he didn't. Many of my classmates took me up on the tutoring and most did rather well, but this wasn't the most special thing for me. The thing that meant the most to me was when Dr. Sevem asked me to tutor his daughter, Megan. It must have been difficult for him, since after all, it was his class and his daughter. I never felt like someone had so much confidence in me, in my life! Something I will never forget and always cherish!
Since this, I have become friends with him and his family. When I had a question or needed a little push, Art was there without hesitation! I never dreamed that this would end so soon!
On July 6th, 1998, at the age of 52, an aneurysm ruptured in his head. Two days later, the doctors officially said he was dead. We had lost a husband, a father, and a friend in one fair swoop!
I once heard
I can only hope that this will be true!
